Joseph A. Trainor was an associate justice on the Massachusetts Appeals Court, the intermediate appellate court for the state of Massachusetts. He was appointed to this position by Governor Jane Swift and took office on December 6, 2001.[1] Trainor retired on December 3, 2018.[2]

Education

Trainor graduated from Saint Anselm College and Suffolk University Law School. He also served in the U.S. Army.[1]

Career

Trainor began his legal career as counsel and staff director of the Joint Committee for the Judiciary of the Massachusetts General Court. In 1978, he became the court administrator of the Juvenile Court Department of the Trial Court. He became general counsel and budget director for the House Committee on Ways and Means in 1980. He joined the law firm Deloitte, Haskins & Sells in 1985, worked there for two years, and then left to become a consultant. In 1991, he returned to the House Committee on Ways and Means. In 1992, he became general counsel for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The following year, he became the assistant secretary for human resources in the Executive Office of Administration and Finance and the chief personnel administrator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He became a judge in 1997 when he was appointed to the Juvenile Court by Governor William F. Weld. He held this position until his appointment to the Court of Appeals.[1]
