Wein works as a sales manager. He has served as post commander of the VFW Post 2202 in Schaumburg, the district commander of the VFW District 4 and the state community activities director of the VFW department of Illinois. Wein earned his bachelor's degree in business management from Northern Illinois University. He and his wife have one daughter.[3]

Three of seven at-large seats on the School District 54 Board of Education were up for general election on April 7, 2015. The seats held by incumbents William Harper, Barbara J. Hengels and Mary Kay Prusnick were on the ballot. They ran against challengers Johannes C. Laun and Joseph Wein. All three incumbents won their bids for re-election.
