Josh Daniels is an at-large member of the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education in California. He was first elected to the board on November 2, 2010.

Daniels faced two fellow incumbents and two challengers in his bid for re-election to one of three at-large seats on November 4, 2014.[1] Josh Daniels won the general election on November 4, 2014.

Daniels works as a staff attorney for the California School Boards Association, advising school districts in California. He grew up in Berkeley and graduated from the Berkeley Unified School District. He earned a bachelor's degree in government and a master's degree in mathematics from Wesleyan University. He earned a second master's degree in public policy and his juris doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley.[2][3]

Three at-large seats on the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Incumbents Karen Hemphill, Josh Daniels and Julie Sinai ran against challengers Ty Alper and Norma J.F. Harrison.

Daniels and Hemphill were successful in their bids for re-election. Sinai, however, came in fourth in vote totals and lost the election. Successful challenger Alper won an at-large seat on the board.

Daniels highlighted the followingachievements from his first term on the school board on his campaign website:

Academic Success for ALL Students
  • Supported our teachers in implementing new, more rigorous math and English curricula.
  • Spearheaded multi-million dollar plan to directly benefit at-risk students (known as the Local Control and Accountability Plan or LCAP).
  • Improved attendance and graduation rates for all students, regardless of race or socioeconomic status.
  • Approved the master plan to coordinate instruction of Berkeley’s 1,200+ English learners.
  • Strengthened Spanish-English Two Way Immersion (also known as TWI or dual immersion) program.


Smart Fiscal Management

  • Led effort to restructure the District's Facilities Plan, saving over $12 million.
  • Led oversight of $30 million renovation project at Berkeley High School, which finished on time and $6 million under budget.
  • Preserved three full-day, pre-school classrooms open despite budget constraints.
  • Prevented $100,000 in cuts in summer school.
  • Prevented additional increase in property tax rates, saving taxpayers approximately $100,000 each year.
