An effort to recall Josh Rardin from his position on the city council of Alamogordo, New Mexico, was launched in June 2012.[1] The recall effort was abandoned in October 2012 after recall supporters failed to gather sufficient signatures.[2] Rardin represents District 4.
Reasons for recall
Michael Smith initiated the recall effort. The recall petition states that Rardin has "betrayed the citizens of Alamogordo by attempting to use his position as city commissioner to benefit himself," and that Rardin "knowingly engaged in a conflict of interest and was found guilty on May 11, 2012, of violating the Governmental Conduct Act by an ethics investigation performed by the New Mexico Secretary of State." The New Mexico Secretary of State found Rardin, a contractor, guilty of violating the governmental conduct act when he voted to sell a piece of city-owned land that was later bid on by one of Rardin's customers. Rardin was advised to disclose his potential conflict of interest, which he did. Rardin denies wrongdoing.[1]
Path to the ballot
Recall organizers needed to collect 525 signatures by October 9, 2012, in order to force a recall election.[1] Recall supporters did not turn in sufficient signatures by the submission deadline, and the recall effort came to an end.[2]
