Candidate Connection

Joshua Hancock participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 29, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Joshua Hancock's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My top 3 priorities in Congress would be first and foremost protect tax payers and tax payer funds. We are taxed at a rate that is way too high and we need to reduce federal spending and reduce federal taxes. My next priority is to bring the War Powers back to the Legislative branch. Our Founding Fathers knew that the Legislative branch would be less likely to push war because they are the ones that do the budget for the nation. The executive branch is too hawkish and the power to go to war should not rest in the hands of one person. My third priority would protect the Constitution from enemies foreign and domestic. We have attacks against the 2nd Amendment and the 4th Amendment, we need to safeguard our rights from those who are trying to take them away.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am very passionate about public safety and school safety with recent school shootings and other mass shootings. I'm a Marine Veteran and a Nuclear Security Specialist so I know what guns can do and I know the best way to meet a threat is with armed people to oppose that threat. Israel had a mass shooting back in 1972 and they put armed people in their schools and have had two failed attempts since. I don't want to try to reinvent the wheel here I want to go with something that works and what works is Armed People in Society. Those who have been properly screened and trained are our best way to protect those we love and care about.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Joshua Hancock answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I like Senator Rand Paul and Ben Shapiro both for different reasons. I like Senator Paul because he is always trying to hold the federal government accountable when it comes to spending and protecting our freedoms. I also enjoy watching Ben Shapiro speak he is a smart man and very fast on his toes in a debate.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
The Constitution is a great guide to start out with not enough politicians read it or adhere to it for my liking which is one of the reasons I’m running. We need more people to follow the Constitution all the time not just when it's politically convenient.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Trustworthiness always be honest with the people you represent. Always be Loyal to the people you represent. Humble, this is one of the most important ones that a lot of politicians don't do. They think once they are elected they are above the law and better then the common person.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I believe in personal freedom and personal accountability. Our government is out of control and we need to reign them in and get them serving the people again instead of their own interests or special interests that have bought them.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Protecting the tax payers from frivolous spending and defending the Constitution and citizen's rights.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to have education reform schools are way over budgeted and aren't delivering education for our kids. We need to do better. We also need armed protection in our schools to keep our kids safe.[3]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
No, all representatives are doing are fund raising and campaigning leaving little time for legislating.[3]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
While canvasing and trying to meet as many people as I can in the district I have met lots of people. Those people are tired of the two parties saying they would support voter ideals and when they get to Washington D.C. they do what the lobbyists tell them. Give me a chance and I will be different. I am not a politician just a normal guy trying to make the world a better place.[3]
