Candidate Connection

Joshua Schoonover participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 15, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Joshua Schoonover's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Listening and giving access to constituemts to ensure they are well represented; Term Limits (3 in the House, 2 in the Senate); and Supporting Pres. Donald Trump (except tariffs and offshore drilling).[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Economy/Jobs; Healthcare; Environment (I am a surfer, love the ocean)Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Joshua Schoonover answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Jesus Christ, because he lived to serve others and to teach kindness. George Washington, because of his bravery and the honorable way he served his people. Judge Gonzalo Paul Curiel, because he had every opportunity to let personal circumstances influence his partiality, yet, even under extreme circumstances he has proven to be impartial and fair.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
No. I am a truly independent thinker.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Candor, honesty, responsibility, compassion, and knowing when to be firm and when to be flexible.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I am trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. (Eagle)[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Reading legislation, every page of it; listening to constituents and giving access (taking calls/town hall meetings); taking positions and articulating positions to constituents to keep them informed; keeping the word promised during the campaign; being a respectable person; practicing the "golden rule".[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to help others, give more than I receive, and be remembered as a Representative who left the District better off than when taking Office.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The space shuttle Challenger exploded while my 1st grade class was watching. We didnt understand for a while what had happened, but teachers were obviously scrambling to figure out what to do.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I mowed lawns around the neighborhood for $5 each. I did that through high school.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas, because something about the lights, family, home cooking, and service to others just makes me feel warm and content.[3]
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I have drafted legislation that effectively removes the conflict of interest of the sitting Congress and allows objective voting to pass this very important objective, its on my website. I support term limits. Drain the Swamp![3]
