Joy Motts was a candidate for an at-large seat on the Antioch Unified School District school board in California. Motts was defeated in the at-large general election on November 8, 2016.[1]

Motts previously served on the board. She was first elected to the board on November 2, 2010, and served until 2014, when she was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014.

Motts works as a senior mortgage consultant for the Delta Lending Group. A lifelong resident of Antioch, she is the daughter of a former member of the Antioch Unified School District Board of Trustees and the mother of an Antioch Unified graduate. In addition to serving on the board, Motts is involved with the California School Boards Linked Learning Task Force and Antioch's Suburban Poverty Task Force. She also serves on the board of directors for the Celebrate Antioch Foundation.[2][3]

Three of the five seats on the Antioch Unified School District board of trustees were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. In their bids for re-election, incumbents Diane Gibson-Gray, Fernando Navarro, and Alonzo Terry faced newcomers Mike Burkholder and Crystal Sawyer-White. They also faced former Antioch Unified trustees Gary Hack and Joy Motts. Gibson-Gray won another term, Sawyer-White was elected as a new member, and Hack returned to the board after two years away.[4][5]

Motts began the race with an existing account balance of $1,522.30 from her previous campaign. She reported $8,057.77 in contributions and $8,367.17 in expenditures to Contra Costa County Elections Division, which left her campaign with $1,212.90 on hand in the election.[6]

Endorsements

Motts was endorsed by the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County, the Antioch Education Association, the California School Employees Association, the Antioch Management Executive Board, the community organization Evolve, and the Contra Costa Building and Construction Trades Council.[7][8][9][10]

Two at-large seats on the Antioch Unified School District Board of Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014. The race featured two incumbents, Joy Motts and Gary Hack, and two challengers, Walter Ruehlig and Debra Vinson. Challengers Ruehlig and Vinson defeated incumbents Motts and Hack.
