Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. Vicente Gonzalez (D) defeated Tim Westley (R), Vanessa Tijerina (G), and Ross Lynn Leone (L) in the general election on November 8, 2016. A runoff for both parties was held on May 24, 2016. In the runoff primaries, Westley defeated Ruben Villarreal, and Gonzalez defeated Juan Palacios Jr. Incumbent Ruben Hinojosa did not seek re-election.[2][3]

The November 4, 2014, general election in Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District featured four seats up for election. In the Place 1 race, incumbent Juan "Sonny" Palacios Jr. faced a challenge from Patricio Eronini. Place 2 incumbent Jaime Chavana did not file for re-election. Eduardo "Eddie" Saenz Jr. and Oscar Salinas ran for that seat. Place 3 incumbent David Torres did not file for re-election, either; Ellie Torres and John J. Rodriguez faced off to replace him. In the Place 5 race, Martin "Doc" Castillo ran against Xavier Salinas.

Funding

I come from a proud family that has been involved with public service for as long as I can remember. I want to work for you. We need to create more living wage jobs, improve our schools, and make public safety - a top priority. With nearly a decade of public service experience, I know what it takes to find solutions, navigate the complicated governmental agencies, and get things done.

  • Education: Sonny believes in investing in education and our future. Education is the key to any successful community and country. Sonny will continue to push early literacy, early college high school programs, STEM programs, and the arts in schools. He wants to make sure that college is affordable for all students so that we ensure a successful future and prosperous workforce.
  • Infrastructure: The State of Texas and our region especially, is experiencing an upswing in rapid growth in population. To meet the needs of our population we need to improve the infrastructure that supports our communities, businesses and home. We need to to seek funding to fix our antique drainage systems, levees, highways, ports, and bridges that our communities need to attract new businesses and create jobs.
  • Economy: Sonny believes in rebuilding our economy. The economy defines our growth, business and success. Small businesses are the backbone to our communities. Sonny fully supports small businesses and welcome economic development projects that will impact our district and provide jobs. By investing in the future, he plans on strengthening our community banks and lenders, provide access to capital and tax relief to small businesses. Sonny will work to work on public/private partnerships with key industries in our country to encourage job creation in our region.
  • Labor Unions: Sonny is a friend of Labor who will fight for Texas’ working families. He will stand in solidarity with Labor to strengthen and defend worker’s rights to organize. Sonny will demand economic freedom for Texas’ working families when he supports an increase in the Federal Minimum Wage to achieve a Realistic Living Wage. He will stand with Labor to demand that the exporting of jobs overseas be stopped and that more good paying jobs are created here in America. Sonny stands with and supports the working men and women of America. .
  • Healthcare: Sonny wants to support the Affordable Care Act and bring opportunities to all Americans to be able purchase a healthcare plan for their families. He fully supports comprehensive health insurance reforms that have improved access, affordability, and quality in health care for Americans. Sonny fully believes in improving care delivery by promoting a priority on prevention and wellness. He believes that healthy life options and education should be provided to students in the public school system to start healthy habits at an early stage.
