Child custody battle leads to judicial campaign
Juan Labadie's divorce and child custody case was first handled by Judge Michael P. Mentz. His ex-wife, Lori Labadie, asked that Juan be given a drug test in April 2014, but he refused to take it. Due to his refusal, Judge Mentz found him in contempt of court, and ordered him to serve 30 days in house arrest. Hours later, Labadie announced that he would run against Mentz in the 2014 election. Mentz then stepped down from Labadie's case, which was taken over by Judge Donald A. Rowan, Jr., who also found Labadie in comtempt of court. Rowan ruled that until Labadie took the drug test, he was prohibited from seeing his children. Labadie said he did not intentionally defy the drug test order, and that the test was unlawfully ordered. "There has never been good cause shown. There's only been mud thrown around that has landed on me," he said.[5][6]
