Voting rights. I've volunteered with an organization that assists with registration and photo IDs. While doing this work I discovered there is a large proportion of Virginians who have lost the right to vote because they have been convicted of a felony. There are only 12 states in the US that still practice this relic of Jim Crow, and Virginia is one of those states. Last year I assisted 24 people in my home county in getting their rights restored and registering them to vote. We need to end this practice in VA and make voting easier.
Eleanor Roosevelt. She worked tirelessly for the rights of all, and ultimately was a key figure and the lead author on the United Nations statement for human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
An elected official should be a problem solver who is responsive to all her constituents, even if the response is a reason why the official will not support something the constituent is advocating for. Holders of public office need the courage to talk with (not only "to") all the people they represent. An elected official, just as is true for a sitting judge, should strive to not only avoid corruption, but also to avoid the appearance of corruption. This means they should not seek nor receive benefit from their office beyond the minimum allocated by statute for accomplishing their job.
I am willing to listen to my constituents' concerns and to research issues extensively in order to make the best decision possible for various issues. My life experience has taught me many personal lessons about healthcare, education, voting rights, criminal justice reform, and other issues that concern the voters of the 56th district. I have managed many large projects as a college professor, the last was a multi-million dollar science education grant that required problem-solving and critical thinking at every step of the way. I'll bring those skills to the House of Delegates.
