I am a rancher, with a strong work ethic and strong, conservative values. I am running for South Dakota State Senate, in District 27, serving Bennett, Haakon, Jackson, Oglala Lakota, and Pennington Counties.
- I am a full time resident of District 27. I live and work in Bennett County, SD. I raise my family here and I am an active member in the community where I live.
- South Dakota's #1 industry is Agriculture. I believe South Dakota Legislature needs better representation in Agriculture. I am a full time rancher, and I will take my experience to Pierre to help Ag producers have a voice in Pierre.
- I have gained a lot of experience by being a Bennett County Commissioner. I am a very active commissioner, that enjoys working for each and every person in our County.
I have strong conservative values. I believe in the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Bill of Rights. I believe that the people run the government, not the other way around. I am pro 2A, pro family, and pro America. I will bring common sense to Pierre, and i will uphold the rights of the citizens of South Dakota.
I actually look up to a lot of people. I look up to anyone with a big heart. People willing to put others in front of themselves. People who share, and people that are successful in what they do. I look up to people that work hard, or have fought for our rights. People with a strong set of morals, people that are honest, and people that can be trusted. These are the values I try to build my life around, and I look up to people that have lived their life this way.
Representing the people you are elected to speak for. Every single person in your district should be able to speak with you at any time. I believe that you are elected to represent every person from your district, and they all deserve the same amount of respect and understanding. I give this to the residents of Bennett County now, and I would do the same for the residents of District 27.
I am honest and very open. I am a full time resident of this district. I am a people person, and I enjoy visiting and listening to people's concerns. I have a strong set of morals, and i always try to do the right thing.
You are responsible for every person in your district. You are the person to listen to their concerns and do what needs to be done.
I feel like the government cares very little for the people. I would like to leave a legacy that there are still good people in government and that the government can still be trusted.
Some of my major life events include graduating College in 2000, and in 2001, I married my wife, Jamie. In 2007, My first daughter, Hadley was born, followed by Sadie in 2011. In 2011, we also got the oppertunity to lease a ranch, and bought our first set of cows. It was a very big decision, but we came to the conclusion that we wanted to raise our kids on a ranch and to give them a childhood like my wife and I had. We wanted them to learn responsibility and give them a strong work ethic. We knew that there is no better place to teach them this than a ranch and working with livestock.
I worked as a pen back runner at the local sale barn when I was 13. This was my first paying job. I made $3.00/ hour. Before that, I was always out working with my Dad, farming and ranching. Throughout school and college, I also worked as a grocery bagger, a bus boy, a pheasant cleaner, farm hand, county conservation labored, and as a bridge builder. After college, I worked as a ranch hand, a county laborer, a warehouse manager, and as a commercial weed sprayer. After learning the trade, my wife and I started our own weed spraying business that we operated for 5 years. Since that time we have started, and have been building and operating our family ranch.
I am not much of a book reader. I read newspapers and magazine articles.
Augustus McCrae from Lonesome Dove, or Monte Walsh.
I don't really know. The radio doesn't work in the tractor, and I am pretty consumed with calving and commission work during this Covid-19 outbreak.
I am actually a very positive person, and that has taken me a long ways. Don't get me wrong I have had my fair share of struggles, but I typically say a prayer and ask for God's helping hands, and even the biggest struggles seam to go away.
I do believe it helps, but I also believe in term limits and that one person should not be in office for too long. I feel it is good to have new members come into office that deal with every day life in the public. Everyone that runs for office has to start somewhere. I myself an currently a county commissioner, and the experience I have learned as a commissioner will help me in Pierre,
I believe that on of our states biggest debates will be the legalization of marijuana. I also feel that limiting the tax rate and limiting the size of government will also be big issues.
I believe they need to have a good relationship to move forward, but I also believe that there needs to be a separation of powers between the legislative branch and the executive branck.
Yes, I do believe that it is good to build relationships with other legislators. I feel that each person should think for themselves, and do their best to represent the people from their district, but often legislators can help each other understand different topics that they are not familiar with.
I would definitely like to be on the Agriculture committee. Like I said before, Agriculture is South Dakota's #1 industry, and with my experience in agriculture, I would be an asset to the Agriculture committee.
I would not be interested in being in a leadership position for at least a couple of years. If I was asked to step up after a couple years, I would, but it is not something I would pursue at this time.
Some of the past legislators that I look up to come from right here in our district. Steve Livermont and Liz May did a great job of representing the people that live in District 27. They both left some very big shoes to fill. Betty Olson is another legislator that put her heart and soul into South Dakota.
