Hines has served on the appellate court since 2013. If her nomination is approved by the Governor's Council, she will replace Justice Ralph D. Gants as he is elevated to the position of chief justice, and she will become the first black female to join the state's highest court. Justices in Massachusetts serve until the age of 70.[2][3]
