Judge James misconduct hearing begins next week
July 13, 2012
Michigan: The misconduct trial of Judge Sylvia A. James will occur next week in the Michigan Supreme Court. James was investigated by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission and recommended for removal from office. The commission has accused the judge of improperly using court funds to promote herself, which she denies.[1]
Judge James has served on the 22nd District Court since 1988. In April 2011, she was put on administrative leave by the Michigan Supreme Court after an court audit revealed questionable spending.[1]
As the head of the state judiciary, the high court will determine the ultimate punishment, if any is necessary. Though the commission recommends removal, the court also has the option to suspend James, give a public reprimand, or consider other avenues.
