Judge Porter retires from Minnesota District Court

Hennepin County, Minnesota: Charles A. Porter, longtime judge of the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District, retired on August 8, 2011 and became a senior judge the following day. He is 66 years old and has served on the District Court since 1982. "I'm the institutional memory, because I was there when it happened," the judge stated.[1]
Porter spent six years as a judge advocate for the U.S. Air Force (1970-1976) and the same amount of time as a lawyer in Minneapolis (1974-1980) prior to joining the Municipal Court in 1980. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1977 to 2003.[2]
Notable cases over which Porter has presided include: the 1984 conviction of John Clark Donohue for molesting three boys at his Minneapolis Children's Theatre Company; a 1986 case regarding gang violence and the murder of Christine Kreitz; a 2007 case in which Porter declined the request of former U.S. Sen Larry Craig's attorneys to withdraw a guilty plea after the senator was arrested in a sex sting; and a 2008 case in which an 11-year-old girl was killed by a misfired bullet from a nearby gang member.
Porter will continue to serve over certain courts as a senior judge, although his workload will be greatly diminished.[1]
