The Judicial Update

October 31, 2011

Honolulu, Hawaii: Chief Judge Shackley F. Raffetto of 2nd Circuit Court has been selected for his exceptional judicial competence to receive Hawaii State Judiciary's 2011 Jurist of the Year award. When choosing a jurist for the award, Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald took into consideration a number of aspects of potential honorees' careers, including, judicial competence as evidenced by the quality of decisions made, extrajudicial contributions to the administration of justice, and participation in community service. Judge Raffetto has done much in his career to deserve the award.[1]

For example, he pushed for the creation of the drug court in Maui County, of which he is now presiding judge. He has also served as chairman of the Committee on Jury Innovations for the 21st Century. Additionally, Judge Raffetto has received the Defense Security Cooperation Agency Director's Award for a unique court observer program he created and developed which involves opening his home and his courtroom to distinguished jurists from Russia, Mongolia and Thailand in order to facilitate their observance of the U.S. justice system at work.[1]

Judge Raffeto has been a Circuit Court judge since 1994 and chief judge of the court since 2000.[1]
