Judge pulls double duty as Michigan judgeships are eliminated

Michigan: Judge Gregory S. Ross has begun serving in two courts, due to recent reductions in the number of judgeships across the state. He replaced retired Judge R. Terry Maltby on the Sanilac County Probate Court in early Jan. 2012 and continues to serve on the District Court 73A. "Nobody asked me if I thought I could handle the work of two judges," he said, although he added that he is not bitter about it.

The changes are the result of Public Act 300, which Gov. Snyder signed into law in December of 2011. The District 73A and Sanilac County Probate Courts will be merged. Similarly, 45 judgeships across the state will be cut, saving an estimated $7 million per year. Visiting judges may still be used to help manage caseloads.
