Judge reinstates roadless rule, protecting Tongass National Forest
March 7, 2011
Anchorage, Alaska: U.S. District Judge John W. Sedwick reinstated the Clinton-era Roadless Rule on Friday, finding the Bush administration's exemption of the Tongass Forest arbitrary and capricious.
The Roadless Rule protects roadless areas in national forests from commercial logging and road building.
Although Judge Sedwick reinstated the rule, he didn't vacate three timber sales authorized under the Bush administration's exemption. He said that decision is left to the Agriculture secretary.[1]
