Judge sides with New Mexico Land Commissioner in land swap dispute
January 15, 2012
New Mexico: Judge Sarah Singleton of New Mexico's First Judicial District Court has ruled in favor of New Mexico Land Commissioner Ray Powell's 2011 decision to cancel a land exchange between the State Land Office and private ranch owners. In 2009 Former Land Commissioner Patrick Lyons negotiated a swap of 7,205 acres of public land known as White's Peak for 3,327 acres of nearby Stanley Ranch. The deal was opposed and criticized by sportsman, naturalists, and environmental groups across the state. The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled against the deal in 2011, prompting Commissioner Powell to cancel it. Stanley Ranch owners then appealed, but Judge Singleston upheld the cancelation last week.[1]
