Judicial Election Task Force meets in Arkansas
August 8, 2011
Arkansas: Last week a newly formed Judicial Election Task Force discussed challenges and improvements to elections in the state. The group was created by the Arkansas Supreme Court, in hopes to avoid the negative attention brought about by judicial elections elsewhere in the U.S. There were four guest speakers, including Judges Wendell Griffen of the Sixth Circuit and Jon Comstock of the Arkansas 19th Judicial Circuit West.[1]
Judges in Arkansas compete in nonpartisan elections. The task force is not suggesting major changes to the method of judicial selection in the state, but instead was created to identify potential improvements to the current system. They will focus on: voter guides with information on judges/candidates, rapid response teams, changes to runoff elections and recusals. This forum was an opportunity for those who interact with the system to provide feedback.[1]
