Born in Statesville, N.C., I moved to Greenville, S.C., with my family, in 1962, and graduated from James L. Mann High School in 1970. I graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a bachelor of arts in Education and a concentration in English.

The mother of two children and grandmother of five, I began my teaching career in Florence, S.C., teaching English for 25 years at Wilson High School. In 2001, my husband Mike and I moved to Anderson, S.C. where I taught for four years at Westside High School. After 29 years of serving South Carolina students, I retired from teaching. I have spent my retirement years serving my community by mentoring local youth, singing in my church choir, working part time as a church secretary, and actively participating in the Anderson County Democratic Party. I also volunteer with Family Promise, United Methodist Women, Days for Girls, and have participated in mission trips to Costa Rica and Angola, Africa. Of course, I also like spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren.

  • My first priority will be to improve South Carolina's education system; we have been failing our students and teachers for far too long. We must listen to our teachers and give them a seat at the decision-making table. Who better to understand the needs of our students than our teachers? Many students in South Carolina have no access to broad band internet and our teachers' pleas for higher salaries, more respect from administrators and legislators, and smaller class sizes have been ignored. South Carolina is indeed in the middle of an educational crisis; we have a teacher shortage, one that will only grow larger if we don't do better.
  • Secondly, I will support legislation that will address affordable, quality healthcare for ALL of our residents, especially women, children, and LGBTQ teens and adults who are far too often the victims of domestic and/or sexual violence in SC. I will be an advocate for them, working to strengthen and enforce penalties against their perpetrators. I will support a woman's reproductive rights and freedom from governmental control.
  • I will work to ensure ALL South Carolinians have access to affordable housing and safe neighborhoods with safe parks for children to enjoy. Our poor communities suffer from dilapidated, unsafe housing, roads in poor repair, gun violence, and police brutality. Such inequity has no place in the 21st Century or in our democracy.
Public education, health care, and gun violence
The most important characteristics for an elected official to have are the ability and desire to listen to others, the ability to think creatively and collaboratively to solve problems, and the strength of his or her convictions about what is right.
My qualities that would make me a successful officeholder are my ability and desire to listen to others, particularly my constituents. I am good at analyzing problems and working on solutions by studying and researching. I can express myself well orally and in writing. I have a lot of empathy and a heart to serve.
The first public event I remember is seeing President John F. Kennedy give the commencement address at my father's alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Then I remember the day President Kennedy was assassinated and how my father and the rest of our family went to visit his father to comfort him. What a sad time!
"If Not For You" by Bob Dylan is a song about the importance of love and relationships. I could add that this includes our God. If not for God we could do nothing, and without our loved ones we also feel like we can do nothing. Bob Dylan wrote a lot of protest songs that I enjoy, but this song sticks in my head lately.
I feel the most important difference is that the House of Representatives is more immediately responsive to the voters because the members are up for re-election every two years. The members of the Senate are elected every four years, thus making them perhaps less responsive than the House members, but more secure to make decisions for the good of the state rather than at the behest of voters. Both chambers are necessary.
I feel that it is beneficial for state legislators to have experience in government or politics because this experience teaches cooperation, strategy, and most importantly you learn to contact people, reach out to people and listen to people. The more contacts you have, the better.
I favor an impartial board to be in charge of redistricting.
