I have spent my life serving LD 20 as the mom of two successful now-adult sons, a teacher for 27 years at Cactus and Greenway High Schools, and a community leader. A teacher, team mom for soccer and Little League teams, co-founder of Theater Works, church board member, and community center director, I know that we all do better when everyone gets their chance to succeed. Now, I'm running for office because as a teacher and mom, it breaks my heart that students in over 1800 Arizona classrooms had no permanent, qualified teacher this year. We're failing our children - and our economy. I am committed to listening to the people of this district and working together to get things done for our community. This is my home.
  • I will work to make smart investments in our schools so that every student gets a quality education and teachers are treated with the respect they deserve
  • I will foster a strong economy that comes from ensuring that we have a strong, educated workforce, good-paying jobs, opportunity for all, and a sustainable community for our children.
  • I will work to expand access to quality, affordable healthcare, help reduce costs, and protect people with pre-existing conditions.
We must invest in education in order to ensure that everyone has their chance at the American dream - and that we're able to grow a strong economy that benefits all of us. I grew up in Arizona at a time when my dad could support our family of five on his teaching salary. He and my mom inspired me to become a teacher as well, and I was able to continue to do the work I loved even after becoming a single mom of two sons. But more recently, while volunteering with a master 2nd-grade teacher, I was horrified to learn that she had to work four jobs to make ends meet. Finally, she left Arizona for a much higher-paying teaching job in another state. As we know, this has become an epidemic - and it's because too many of our elected leaders do not value the essential role of educators.

Arizona has been at the bottom of the nation for over a decade in every measure of education funding. It is vital to our economy and our future that we have qualified, certified, highly trained teachers and education support professionals in our classrooms, and that our students have safe modern facilities and resources.
One of the legislators that I look up to is Polly Rosenbaum. As someone who appreciates Arizona history, I admire that she was an energetic figure in the Arizona State House for 45 years until 1997 when she was 95. She was truly an example of living history in our state.

First, I think I relate to her because we both have deep and wide roots in our communities that come from having been high school teachers and active in our districts.

I would like to follow her example as a strong warrior for fighting abuses of taxpayer money, and as a staunch supporter of education, a leader in strengthening our community college system, and an advocate for libraries, culture and the preservation of Arizona history. It's also important for me to continue her work to stand up for and ensure opportunities for women.

I deeply appreciate her advice that, "Nobody does anything alone. You have one vote, you have to have a lot of others with you...If you feel that you are right, you have to be persistent until you accomplish what you want to do."

Ultimately, though, I share her reason for serving in the legislature. She said that there were "things I wanted to do and get done. I wanted many, many things for my constituents. There wasn't anything for myself I wanted, but for the things that they needed in different parts of Arizona."

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Arizona

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states. To contribute to the list of Arizona scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
