I am Hoosier born and raised; a graduate of Bishop Dwenger High School, Ball State University, Northern Arizona University, and AVOW (Advancing the Voices of Women). I have been married for 23 years, am a mom, a grandma, and a concerned community member. I have been teaching for over 25 years and currently serve as a union representative for my school. I am a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism and I am bilingual; a fluent Spanish speaker. In my free time I like to advocate for children and adults with special needs and learn new languages.
I am very passionate about healthcare. All Hoosiers who want healthcare should have it. That's why we need to raise the minimum wage, expand Medicaid, and legislate an affordable basic health care plan for those who do not qualify for Medicaid coverage or employer insurance. I am also very passionate about education, energy, voter's rights, term limits in congress and arts in the community.
I look up to Eleanor Roosevelt because of her service to this nation and to this world. A lot of people only know her as First Lady, but she served on the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women under Kennedy's presidency
and she was the First United State's Representative to the United Nation's Commission on Human Rights. She worked tirelessly to help others; especially women and children.
Elected officials need to listen to and hear what their constituents are saying and then act accordingly with reason. They need to support non-partisan legislation and work with their colleagues across the isle. Always voting party-line, even though many constituents don't support it, is unacceptable and stifles progress.
I possess the empathy and critical thinking skills necessary to be an effective legislator.
Bringing renewable energy to Indiana, adding transgender language to Indiana's hate crime bill, and supporting teachers and students in Indiana's schools
The most significant historical event that I remember is the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. I was 17 years old. Years later, I had the opportunity to travel to Berlin, Germany and visit the remnants of the wall, The Checkpoint Charlie Museum, and former East Berlin. It was an amazing trip; one I will never forget.
My very first job was working at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo. I worked there for two summers in the concession stands. It was an awesome first job and I have very fond memories of working there.
My favorite book is Zorro by Isabel Allende because it's a captivating story and very adventurous.
I was watching Eurovision 2020 on YouTube and the song Solovey from the Ukraine got stuck in my head.
I have a son with Autism. I advocated for him for years, making sure that he had the best parenting, education, and wrap around services so that he could become a functioning adult and participate in society. This experience has given me such a profound heart for children and adults with special needs.
Both the House and the Senate are represented by a supermajority and bills passed are hurting a majority of people as opposed to helping them.
No. It is a civic duty to serve the people. As with any job, as long as you have transferable knowledge and skills, and a propensity to learn, you can write effective legislation and bring positive change to your community.
Indiana's greatest challenges are making sure it's citizens can earn a living wage, have access to affordable healthcare, transition to renewable energy, and provide a first class education to its children.
The governor is a check and balance on the legislature and vice versa. There needs to be a push and pull relationship.
I have heard from several individuals who are disabled, intelligent, and capable, but yet no one will hire them because of their disabilities. This is not acceptable. As a state, we need to do better.
