Julia Moeller, former Adams County treasurer was charged in October with tax evasion, official misconduct and abuse of public records, and on January 14, she plead not guilty to all charges.[1]
During previous hearings, Nebraska State Patrol investigators testified that Moeller and her husband, Dwane, bought a motor home in Grand Island in October 2007, then titled and registered it later that month in Harris County, Texas, under a Texas address that belonged to their niece.[1]
The investigators said proof of $4,084.40 paid in sales tax was faxed from Adams County to Harris County, but a search by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles later found no tax had been paid in Adams County on the vehicle.[1]
The Adams County sales tax form had the initials of another treasurer’s office employee, but that employee told investigators in August that she had never seen that document and didn’t initial it.[1]
Moeller resigned in early January 2009 after a petition for her recall gathered enough signatures to be put on the ballot.[1]
