What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Medicare for All Fully Funded Public Education Environmental Protections and Clean Energy

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The healthcare issue is of great importance to me. As a mother, I have children with pre-existing conditions and my daughter is still on my health insurance plan while she attends college. Without these coverages, our family would be priced out of healthcare. This is a common thread across America where we continue to be one of the only industrialized nations who allow our citizens to go bankrupt over healthcare costs and who allow corporations to reap billions and billions of dollars in profits off the sick and the dying. If we focus our priorities on actual people and not corporate profits, we can restructure our tax base into paying for Medicare for All. Another issue I'm incredibly passionate about is public education. Across America, we must invest in our children, including making sure the infrastructure exists in all communities to allow students access to 21st century technology. From broadband access to modern classrooms to updated curriculum, our students must be given every opportunity to compete in the global market. We must also ensure equity across our campuses so that low income students are not penalized for their parents socio-economic status but are also afforded the best education available. Additionally, we must stop using budget cuts for corporations and the wealthiest as an excuse to cut programs like Medicare and Social Security and funding for the VA. Our seniors have paid into our economy their entire working lives; Medicare and Social Security belong to them. On top of this, no military family should ever have to go on social safety net programs like TANF, or food stamps. Additionally, our veterans have already sacrificed enough in the service of our country; why we do not have fully-staffed mental health support programs across the country for our veterans is unconscionable. Every day, 22 veterans take their own lives while wait times to see a mental health professional is still at least 30 days for our servicemen and women. 660 suicides; we must fully fund mental health for our veterans NOW.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I so admire Eleanor Roosevelt. This powerful woman took her influence, status in society, and privilege and used it to raise a voice to protect children, women, and those victimized by the devastation of war and people's inhumanity to man. From the Declaration on Human Rights to her support of the African-American community in our country, she is a woman who epitomizes what public service is supposed to look like.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Some of the most powerful books I've read discuss the challenges of being American in a society that too often defines "American" as white. Amy Tan's Joy Luck Club is a powerful testimony to the generational challenges of adapting to American society while maintaining a connection to your past and to your culture. Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is one of my favorite books to read with my students because, as a Native American, even Mr. Alexie struggled to find a place between two worlds: the tribe and white America. These, and many books like them, teach about inclusivity and diversity in a human
