I'm Julie Liskany and I'm running for School Board in South-Western City School District. I have lived in the district with my husband Steve for over 25 years. We have raised our two boys here and we remain active members of this community. I am a Fashion Merchandiser as well as a Fitness Instructor, and I have served in several leadership roles over the past 20 years. I am passionate about advocacy and inclusion for Special Education Students and their families, and I look forward to continuing that work as a Board Member.
  • I want to improve Academic Achievement in SWCSD. My goal is raising Reading and Math proficiency scores by at leas 15% through programs like Reading interventions, mentor programs, book clubs, and an increased presence of librarians in the elementary grades; providing more training/interventions for Special Education students; implement Parent Advisory Curriculum Teams to review curriculum; offer Credit Flexibility programs for high school students.
  • I plan to increase Parental and Community Involvement in SWCSD. Creating a positive school culture in all school buildings with parental and community partnerships; promote critical thinking skills and leadership opportunities within classrooms; offer summer internships/programs for high school students to work with local businesses and earn credits toward graduation.
  • I am committed to Safer Schools and Learning Environments in SWCSD. I plan to ensure each school is following district policies; provide more training for teachers and aides in the area of Special Education; increase the number of School Nurses by 10%.
I am most passionate about providing quality education for all students in our district with an emphasis on our diverse learners. It is imperative that we are meeting the needs of our Special Education students, English Learners and Economically Disadvantaged students. Working with families and community partners to ensure we are reaching these students is key to overall success. I look forward to bringing this to light as a Board Member.
The School Board's primary function is that of policy making. Evaluation of the superintendent and treasurer on a regular basis is another primary responsibility.
I plan to build good working relationships with members of the community and local businesses. Working with parents, community, and business partners will make for a strong successful district. Creating safe schools with a connection to local police and fire departments will ensure real life connections with students. Local businesses providing job training and internships to students will strengthen their community ties and offer life skills and jobs to our youth. My goal is building a community of learners by working together in a team effort.
The safety and security of our students is of utmost importance. Evaluating safety protocols and lockdown procedures is a necessity. Ensuring staff have opportunities for training in CPR, Special Education interventions, and medication monitoring. Visiting school buildings on a regular basis and providing transparency between staff, parents, and district administration will ensure district policies are being followed.
