“ | What is your political philosophy?
I believe the way to create positive change in our community is to stick to the facts and find the commonalities between both sides. If we can figure out what we collectively agree on, we can branch out from there in order to find an equitable solution. I'm running for DVUSD school board because I believe all students deserve access to the best public education possible and I am willing to put in the hard work to make it happen. I value all of our educators, staff, parents and community members and see each of these groups as vital to creating this. My vast background in special education, non-profit work, in the business community and through community advocacy allows me to view important issues from several different lenses while keeping the focus on students first. Is there anything you would like to add? I am a 4th generation Arizonan, a graduate of Grand Canyon University with a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, and a former special education teacher in Paradise Valley School District. My husband and I have lived in DVUSD for the last 14 years and have chosen to send our 5 kids to DVUSD schools. Our eldest has graduated and is married with 2 boys and our 4 younger children are in K-10th grade. After leaving the classroom, I became a small business owner and also own a non-profit that provides birthday parties to children in need in AZ. In 2016 I found myself on a new path of community advocacy when the Department of Corrections renovated Adobe Mountain School and turned it into a reentry center for homeless sex offenders. Working with my running mate Ann O’Brien, the legislature and the governor’s office, we were able to create change in North Phoenix, ensuring the community’s safety. We helped author and lobbied for 3 bills, all which became law in 2017. Last year I advocated for better fire response times in the Norterra Community and as a result, helped Phoenix Fire Engine 55 come into service & helped Station 55 become a reality. I am also a current member of the North Gateway VPC and have previously served on the Governor’s Opioid Task Force and a committee to study statewide juvenile justice in AZ. During the Red for Ed walkout, I helped organize a district wide food drive in our community collecting, assembling and distributing approximately 3500 meals so students had access to food during school closure. I believe the key to creating stronger and safer communities is through our neighborhood district schools. As a governing board member, I am committed to putting our students first, which means doing what it takes to lower class sizes, increase teacher pay and morale, and bring in innovate educational programs and technology in order to empower our students to be college and/or career ready upon graduation. Our children are more than test scores and dollar signs. I am a fierce advocate for our public schools. I operate in a constructive, and factual manner and bring real solutions to the bargaining table. I will bring my experience and success as a teacher, wife, mother, entrepreneur and children’s advocate to the Deer Valley Governing Board. I hope you’ll join me on my journey to create a stronger educational system and a safer community![2] |
