Julie Sinai was an at-large member of the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education in California. She was first appointed to the board on May 1, 2013, and served until 2014.[1]

Sinai faced two fellow incumbents and two challengers in her bid for re-election to one of three at-large seats on November 4, 2014.[2] Julie Sinai lost the general election on November 4, 2014.

Sinai is the local government and community relations director at the University of California at Berkeley. She has previously worked as an after school youth worker, as a director of children, youth and family, as the director of school-linked programs at the Berkeley Unified School District and as a mayor's senior aide for youth and education. Working as the mayor's senior aide, Sinai helped launch the summer literacy program Berkeley United in Literacy Development (BUILD). She earned her bachelor's degree in community service and public affairs from the University of Oregon and her master's degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco.[3][4]

In addition to serving on the Berkeley Unified Board of Education, Sinai has been involved in school site councils and parent committees. She and her husband have two children, both of whom graduated from Berkeley Unified schools.[3]

Three at-large seats on the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Incumbents Karen Hemphill, Josh Daniels and Julie Sinai ran against challengers Ty Alper and Norma J.F. Harrison.

Daniels and Hemphill were successful in their bids for re-election. Sinai, however, came in fourth in vote totals and lost the election. Successful challenger Alper won an at-large seat on the board.

Sinai reported $30,059.99 in contributions and $511.98 in miscellaneous cash increases to the City of Berkeley. She also reported $15,518.49 in expenditures. Including her reported $100.00 existing balance, that left her campaign with $15,153.48 cash on hand as of October 25, 2014.[5]
