My personal passion is for the Arts. As a musician and the parent of two Fine Arts students, I know firsthand the value these programs provide - not only for social and emotional growth, but for brain development in other areas, as well. I'm also acutely aware that Fine Arts are always on the chopping block. Band, Choir, Musical Theatre, etc. are all important parts of our culture and community and must be promoted and protected.
I admire those first political leaders of our young country, and of Virginia - the average citizens who willingly left their farms and businesses to do their part in helping their community. Who had no expectation of riches or rewards but who only wanted to serve and then return home to their lives and families.
Integrity, responsiveness, and flexibility, along with the mindset of being a "public servant" vs. a politician (and a thick skin, of course).
Aside from a legacy of good service to my constituents, I hope to inspire other "average citizens" to step up and serve their community in this way.
There were a lot of historical events in my early childhood - the Vietnam War, Watergate, Roe v. Wade,
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan. I love the themes of friendship, loyalty, sacrifice, and hope. My favorite quote is something Gandalf says to Frodo, "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
My constituents are the citizens of Loudoun County - whether they have children in the schools or not. With 68% of local tax dollars going to the schools, and the reputation of the local school system being the number one reason families move where they do, all taxpayers and homeowners have a vested interest in the cost and quality of our schools.
Communication, communication, communication. Parents want an honest dialogue. Even if we don't always agree, people appreciate transparency and responsiveness.
It's all about priorities. We must keep the money in the classroom vs. "middle management" or administration. Students and their needs must come first.
