I have been a public education supporter my entire life. Thanks to degrees in secondary education from the University of Arizona and a master’s in educational leadership from Arizona State University, I spent my career teaching all levels of high school as well as coaching sports, sponsoring clubs, and serving on multiple school, district, and state committees. I worked for 32 years in the Glendale Union High School District teaching all levels of English, Education Professions, and the leadership class for Student Government, as well as 8 years as a Curriculum and Assessment Specialist and then Professional Development Specialist for the West-MEC district. Those decades of experience grounded me in understanding that all students have individual learning needs as well as the importance of planning and implementing a diverse set of programs to meet those needs equitably.
  • School boards need thoughtful, collaborative members who understand the broad, diverse needs of their students, their staff, and their communities. A school board has to make difficult financial, legal, personnel, curricular, construction decisions. A candidate should seek a position on a school board solely because they want to work together with other board members and the district and community to make that district stronger and more successful.
  • Arizona public schools are significantly underfunded and under supported. A school board member should be seeking active ways to support stable and increased funding for the district, including, but not limited to, override and bond ballot issues. Members should also be conscious of supporting the district with all decisions and requests that allow it to make the most efficient and effective use of the resources our district is entrusted with.
  • School safety is a critical issue we all have to address. This includes identifying and funding critical upgrades to our campuses to make them as secure as possible, training for our staff to ensure that they have the tools to address the innumerable challenges that small and grownup human beings bring into any space, and creating policies that support a safe learning and working environment for everyone who is a part of Deer Valley Unified School District.
Reasonably funding Arizona's public schools.

Retaining all education staff, especially teachers.
A strong, diverse school curriculum that prepares our students to be successful at each new step of their education journey.

Growing stronger public support for our schools and staff.
I loved teaching. The curiosity and perseverance of young people is a miracle. The challenges they face are endless. When those two factors collide, which is basically every day, every class, every conversation, teachers can make a profoundly important and caring difference. As a school board member, I would want to make sure our teachers have as many resources as possible to meet these challenges and remove as many obstacles from their path as possible. I would carry that rock solid commitment into every interaction and every decision I would have as a school board member.
A school board member must be passionate about the value of public schools in our communities. Public schools educate everyone, and therefore, we have to be ready to address an endless range of human needs. I have this passion, and it will drive me to consider the huge diversity in perspectives among our staff, students, and communities members in order to make decisions that affect everyone in our district.
A school board member represents all of our community: our voters, our students, our staff. As a result, we are required to make the best decisions on policy and enforcing policy that we can, as fairly and as objectively as possible. Beyond the actual board meetings, school board members are advocates for their districts. To do that, we need to be visible at public events and work with other municipal and state organizations to ensure stability and public support for the district.

Save Our Schools
School districts receive tax monies from their communities. Arizona has created specific statutes that regulate the use of this money in public schools and requires an annual audit to ensure that those statutes are met. Providing this information to our communities ensures financial transparency and accountability.
