June 3, 2014 ballot measures in California
June 3 was the 6th date in 2014 for local ballot measure elections in California.
One hundred and forty-five local measures were presented to voters across California on June 3, 2014. Out of the total, 116 were approved and 29 were defeated. Below is a break down of the finance measures featured in this election:
- Parcel taxes - 17 approved and 5 defeated.
- All 6 school parcel tax measures were approved.
- Sales taxes - 10 approved and 1 defeated
- 1 county measure approved and 1 defeated
- 9 city measures approved
- School bonds - 34 approved and 10 defeated.
- * $2,432,290,000 in bonds was approved, $385,630,000 was rejected.
Many measures sought to approve parcel taxes or bond issues for schools, city road repair, emergency medical services and more. Other new and unique local ballot measures also popped up around the state.
Santa Barbara Measure M, a unique initiative spearheaded by Santa Barbara County Supervisor Peter Adam, if approved, would have required the county to maintain all county-owned roads, parks and buildings in the same or better condition. Measure M was narrowly defeated.[1][2]
Perhaps the most notable measure on the ballot was approved in San Francisco, where voters saw a question to require voter approval for any construction project on the waterfront that exceeds current height zoning limits. This measure, Proposition B, triggered a battle between development interests and preservation activists which featured many of the same key players that were active in November campaigning on both sides of the 8 Washington Street project in Measure B and Measure C. Proposition B, having been approved on June 3, now requires voter approval in a November referendum before arena projects proposed by the Giants and the Golden State Warriors will be allowed to go forward. It also delays several proposed hotel and condo development projects. The prospect of such a delay and the possibility of voter-rejection motivated the Golden State Warriors to abandon their project on Piers 30-32, moving the site of their new arena to the Mission Bay neighborhood instead.[3][4]
