Mississippi: Justice George Carlson, of the Mississippi Supreme Court, received Mississippi State University's 2012 Distinguished Jurist Award. Political science faculty and Pre-Law Society members picked the MSU alum and longtime Supreme Court Justice to be honored at the March 29, 2012 ceremony.

The annual award was established in 1977 and has since been handed out to numerous state Supreme Court Justices, U.S. Attorneys General and two U.S. Supreme Court Justices. Carlson stated, "When I look down the list of previous recipients of this award, I am truly humbled. This state is blessed with trial and appellate judges who possess extraordinary talent and a genuine desire to serve our citizens as they exhibit true allegiance to fair application of the law. To return to my alma mater to receive this prestigious award is, without question, a highlight in my career."[1]

Carlson has served on the Supreme Court since 2001 and has been a presiding justice there since 2009. He is retiring at the end of his current term, on Jan. 1, 2013.[2]
