Justice Holland re-nominated to Supreme Court
February 24, 2011
Delaware: On February 23, 2011, Governor Markell re-nominated Justice Randy Holland to a third term on the Delaware Supreme Court. If confirmed by the state Senate, Holland would be the first justice in the state's history to be appointed to a third term. At present, he is the longest serving justice in the court's history, in addition to having been the youngest person appointed to it.
Of the appointment, Markell said: "Justice Holland would make history if confirmed to a third term and that honor could not be earned by a more committed person than Randy Holland. He is a scholar of the law and legal history, and is a textbook example of the intellectual rigor and fair-mindedness that is a hallmark of the Delaware courts. Our Supreme Court decides issues that can impact the national economy and our lives in Delaware every day. Justice Holland’s wisdom, experience and intellect serve us well."[1]
Holland is a Republican and according to state law if he is not confirmed for another term, his replacement must be of the same party in order to maintain political balance on the high court.[2]
In addition to re-nominating Justice Holland, the Governor re-nominated Judge Kenneth M. Millman to serve a third term on the Sussex County Family Court.[1]
