Lowville, New York: Justice Joseph D. McGuire has announced his plan to retire from the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division on December 30, 2010. The 66-year-old judge has served on this court for 12 years but wants to take advantage of retirement while he's still healthy. He expressed satisfaction with the job though, saying "The people of Lewis County are certainly getting their money's worth with the people that work in the courthouse."

McGuire began his career in 1970 as a lawyer in Lowville. He has also served as a municipal attorney there. In 1999, he was elected judge of Lewis County and in 2001, he was elected to the Supreme Court.

McGuire's seat will be up for election in November of 2011. In the meantime, Gov.-elect Andrew Cuomo may choose, but is not required, to make a temporary appointment.[1]
