May 15, 2012

Carson City, Nevada: Effective May 7, 2012, Justice Michael Cherry has taken over the role of Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. Chief Justice Cherry replaces outgoing Chief Justice Nancy Saitta, who had held the position since September 5, 2011.[1] The role of chief justice is held by members of the Court on a rotating basis.[2]

In Nevada, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court acts as the administrative head of the legal system for the state. In this role, Chief Justice Cherry will speak publicly for the Court and will represent Nevada's judiciary on the national level. He will also preside over the Nevada Supreme Court when it sits as the full court.[2] However, he will not generally serve as a member of the three-justice panels that hear cases argued before the Court, unless another member is forced to recuse herself due to conflicts.[1]

Chief Justice Cherry has been an attorney in Nevada since 1970, and has been a justice on the Nevada Supreme Court since his election in 2006.[3] He has also served as a judge on the Nevada Eighth Judicial District Court[2] and as a deputy public defender in Clark County, in addition to working in private practice.[3] He will hold the position of Chief Justice until January 2013.[2]
