Justice Orie Melvin now suspended without pay
September 6, 2012
Pennsylvania: Justice Joan Orie Melvin has been suspended from her duties on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court since May, when she was indicted for allegedly making her state court staff help on her campaign for the high court. Now, the Pennsylvania Court of Judicial Discipline has decided to remove her state paycheck from the equation, though she will continue to receive medical benefits.[1]
At least one law professor has publicly mentioned that this decision might create a financial strain when one considers the personal cost of the upcoming trial. The implication is that Orie Melvin could make much more in the private practice of law, though the justice has made clear that she will not resign from the court.[2]
