Plymouth, Vermont: United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will be making his first public appearance in Vermont at the Coolidge Center on July 30th, 2011 at 6:45 p.m. for the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation’s Annual Dinner. Justice Breyer will be delivering his remarks and speaking about his new book, Making our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View.[1]

Justice Breyer's book more simply and clearly explains what the Supreme Court does and its role as the "ultimate arbiter of the Constitution’s meaning."[1] The book also details the willingness of the public's acceptance of Supreme Court decisions, the maintenance of public trust, commitment to the rule of law, and having faith in the Constitution.

His book Active Liberty: Interpreting Our Democratic Constitution, was written in 2005 and described by the New York Times as “Provocative and well argued. . . What we need more of, Active Liberty insists, is not activist judges but activist citizens.”[1]

American legal scholar Cass Sunstein also praised Stephen Breyer's approach to law, “will tend to make the law more sensible”. . . . he looks more closely to the “purpose and consequences.”[1]

Justice Breyer's book can be previewed and purchased at Amazon.com.
