Justices Christen and Gleason nominated for federal judgeship

Alaska: Justice Morgan Christen and Sharon Gleason underwent confirmation hearings for federal judgeship last week. They received support from both of Alaska's U.S. senators.[1]
- Morgan Christen is an Alaska Supreme Court justice. She earned her J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1986. Before her appointment to the Supreme Court she served the Alaska Superior Court in Alaska's Third District.[2][1]
- Sharon Gleason is the presiding judge for the Anchorage Superior Court. She earned her J.D. from the University of California, Davis, School of Law in 1983. Before her appointment to the Superior Court, Gleason worked as a sole practitioner in general civil practice.[3][4] If she is elevated to the federal system Anchorage will be left with no female Superior Court judges.[1]
Though if Christen and Gleason are confirmed by the Senate, they will be the first Alaska women to serve on the federal bench.[1]
Another supporter of the nominations, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, called last Wednesday's hearing historic.[1]
Only a few senators on the committee attended the hearing. Chair of the hearing, Sen. Christopher Coons said he would hold the matter open a week before taking committee action. The full Senate also must vote on the nominations.[1]
