Candidate Connection

Justin Hough participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 6, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Justin Hough's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Opioid Crisis

2) Economic Growth
3) Public Education Reform[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

As a 6 year school teacher and son of a teacher and county administrator, I am passionate about ensuring a better future for our young people and our state and I believe that starts with educational reform. Regardless of the change of name, we still have common core in our state and it's crippling our public school system. We're not allowing our teachers to teach and not preparing our young people for the future. We have to tailor education to the student and not the other way around. We also need to look at healthcare reform in the state in the means of the current opioid crisis. Many of our politicians have contributed to this crisis by accepting contributions from big pharma and lobbying for their agendas, rather than what's best for the state. We have the highest number of deaths per capita as it relates to drug overdoses and no one seems to have the answer. We're asking the wrong people. Politicians can't fix this, but they can pass legislation to help regulate and enforce.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Justin Hough answered the following:

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

JFK - I'm ambitious - He had his faults but I believe the Oliver Stone film portrays a man who was truly for the people.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
As a 15 year veteran of the WV Army National Guard, I live my life by the Army Values - Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To serve the people. You're elected to represent the people, not your own interests or for personal gain. You can't please everyone, but your job is to navigate the best you can to support as many as you can.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, I wish to "To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
I don't want to call her a thing, but the favorite thing about my home and coming home everyday is my new baby girl. From the moment I looked into her eyes, I saw hope and was inspired. She's a big reason why I'm running.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
O.A.R. "I Go Through"[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Experience plays a factor, but that sometime can come with baggage that doesn't need carried into the next year. It's important to have a foundation, but you have to be flexible and willing to adapt and change. Sometimes a blank slate can produce the most effective results.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Population decline, declining infrastructure and economy[3]
