Lamar Sternad
Lamar Sternad was a 2012 Democratic candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 26th Congressional District of Florida. Sternad was defeated by Joe Garcia in the Democratic primary on August 14, 2012.[1]
Biography
Sternad was born in Omaha, NE.[2]He attended Bellevue East High School. He earned a degree in funeral services from The W. L. Philbrick School of Funeral Service Education, at Miami-Dade in 2003.[2] Sternad is the Head Hotel Auditor, The Wyndham Garden Hotel in South Beach, FL.[2]

Campaign finance law violation
During the primary stage of the 2012 election season, The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald identified discrepancies in Sternad's campaign finance reports.[3] Beginning in August 2012, the newspapers' also covered alleged violations by the incumbent, Rep. David Rivera (R), who reportedly helped finance mailers attacking Democrat Joe Garcia, Sternad's primary opponent. Garcia prevailed in the primary, and defeated Rivera in the general election on November 6, 2012.[4]
Subsequent investigations by the FBI and the Federal Election Commission resulted in Sternad's indictment on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and concealing the source of unreported campaign funds. Sternad surrendered to federal authorities on February 22, 2013 following a FBI and grand jury investigation which explored Rivera's involvement in the scheme. However it did not produce any charges against Rivera, who denied links to any illegal activity and whose name did not appear in Sternad's indictment. According to The Miami Herald, this is due to the missing testimony of Rivera's close friend as well as Sternad's campaign manager, Ana Alliegro. Alliegro went underground after failing to show up to her meeting with the FBI in September 2012 in which she would have been required to explain eyewitness accounts alleging she funneled the cash from Rivera to Sternad's campaign.[4][5]
Sentencing
On July 10, 2014, Sternad was sentenced to seven months in federal prison for campaign finance violations.[6]

Sternad is married to Odalys Rodriguez. Together they have four sons (Yven, Darryn, Devyn and Justin J.) and one daughter (Anais). They reside in Cutler Bay, Florida.[2]
