I am a father of 4, an attorney, and a very active community-focused volunteer who is passionate about public education. My wife and I relocated to Rochester 5 years ago with our 4 kids so she could pursue opportunities as a physician-scientist at Mayo. We have a 7th grader, 5th grader, 2nd grader, and kindergartner attending RPS. We love our schools and want them to have the community support and resources to be truly world class for our own kids, for their classmates, and for our community. I am troubled by the district’s stubborn inequities and challenging financial forecast, and I’d like to help navigate this chapter.
  • Reading proficiency by grade 3 is a key indicator of academic outcomes. Students that develop strong reading skills in the early elementary years have greater self-confidence in school, a much easier time learning substantive material from written texts, and are less likely to have behavioral challenges or feel disengaged from school in later years. The evidence is in on the best way to educate all kids to read -- including striving readers that exhibit characteristics of dyslexia -- I strongly support aggressively deploying evidence-based literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading.
  • Community mentoring opportunities benefit our students through the perspectives shared with them by more experienced hands, or people that have been in the professional world. And they also benefit our community by giving our broader community an opportunity to have first-hand exposure to what's going on in our schools and with our youth. The experience can be energizing and invigorating, and helps foster robust community partnership with our schools that reinforce one another.
  • Transparency is so important in any public institution, and for our school district it is paramount. I will strongly advocate for public-facing technology-driven dashboards that provide transparency for our community, our school leaders, and anyone with an interest to be able to observe how the district is performing against the goals it has set for itself. I'd like to see our district become the pride of our community, and the envy of everywhere, and providing clear publicly-accessible indicators of success will help keep our community aligned on what we are striving for.
I am passionate about public education generally. I see public education as the single best way to harness the latent potential of a community, and help it become the best version of its future self. Public education should certainly provide a robust instruction in the essential academic subjects, and I will insist on that. But an excellent public education should also allow for liberal exploration of diverse topics. The point is to provide an idea environment conducive to success by giving students opportunities to to identify and pursue their passions. Once we get that part right - connecting students with their passions and giving them the support necessary to pursue them - then our community will benefit immensely with a far more robust, resilient, and diverse economy and through the contributions to civics and the arts that those students will provide.
