I'm running for Virginia’s Congressional District 45. I'm a small business owner, a veteran, a former CIA branch chief, a professor, and a member of Alexandria’s IT Commission. My wife Lisa and I have lived in District 45 for 20 years, minus a few years serving our country in Iraq and India, and we're the parents of two girls.
  • Bringing back unity and trust is the challenge of our time. Focusing on shared practical advantages gets us there. For too long the practical work of government in District 45 has gone unfulfilled, and instead our representative has focused on self-serving and divisive issues during one of our country’s most partisan moments. I plan to reverse that trend, and work to reunify the community and the state through inclusive leadership.
  • Virginia's District 45, including southern Arlington, eastern Alexandria, and Belle Haven, has historically offered incredible advantages to its residents and businesses. Our diversity of people and opportunities are why my family is here, but the advantages of the area are at risk. Our elected official has offered divisive legislation in Richmond, while ignoring our District’s basic problems, including declining public school quality, unchecked traffic congestion, urban sprawl, declining retail revenue, a sewer system that dumps raw waste into the Potomac, and more.
  • My opponents have demonstrated their inability to do the basic work of fair governance. When I'm elected, I'll bring deep experience in solving some of our nation's most complex security, governance and technology challenges. As a former CIA officer, and US Army Special Operations soldier, and current small business owner, professor, and city Commission member, I bring well-researched, thoughtful and non-divisive solutions where others have only brought more division.
I'm driven by a sense of responsibility to the people of my community, state and country. Virginia's District 45, like so many other areas around the nation, has been affected by increasingly divisive politics, while the basic functions of governance seem to be a secondary concern for politicians. I'm passionate about bringing realistic solutions to the practical challenges my District faces to ensure a prosperous, safe and smoothly functioning way of life for its people and businesses. This effort requires us to work together as a community and as a legislature, and everything I've done - and plan to do - includes close cooperation with full community representation.
One of the formative events of my childhood was the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It was a watershed moment in history, representing the demise of Communism. I was living in Germany as military dependent ("Army brat") attending high school at the time, and the changes to the country were rapid and extreme. As a high schooler, eager to understand the world around me, I was struck by the similar interests of the people crossing into the West. They were seeking a better life for themselves and their families after suffering under Communism. This event revealed to me that beneath our political labels, we're all generally seeking the same thing. Getting to those common interests is the key.
