Oakley was running for Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2012. Incumbent Tony Bennett was nominated for re-election on the Republican ticket. Oakley dropped out of the race on June 2 and on June 16 Democrats selected Glenda Ritz as their nominee at the state party convention.[1][2] Third-party candidates have until July 2 to file. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.
