My name is Justin Roemmick and I am a fourth generation South Dakotan. I was born and raised in the Northeast corner of the state. I grew up in Groton, SD where I graduated from school and met my wife Marisa. I attended Northern State University for a time and currently work at 3M Aberdeen. My wife Marisa and I are happy to call Aberdeen our home and couldn't imagine calling any other place home. I decided to run for the State House of Representatives (again!) because I am still passionate about being a voice for working people and families. The working class of this state deserves a seat at the decision making table where it would seem that big business has a louder voice.
  • I stand for working people and families!
  • Bipartisanship is the best policy and I will work with anyone willing person in Pierre.
  • I stand with Educators and public education.
In South Dakota we need to better fund education and make sure that we are paying our educators a regionally competitive wage. We also need to make Pre-K universal across the state to give each child the best possible chance at being lifelong learners. The data suggests that kids who have access to Pre-K go on to be some of the best students which leads to more opportunities. I also believe we need to expand needs based and achievement based aid for college students in the sate, as well as making our vocational trades and tech schools tuition free. With all of this being said conservative estimates show that for every dollar invested into education three are returned in the form of new economic development.

Candidate Connection

Justin Roemmick participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 30, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Justin Roemmick's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Pay equality for women, 12 weeks paid parental leave, and a $15/hr minimum wage by 2025 are my top priorities.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I passionate about fighting for working people and families. Our state legislature has turned their back on working people in favor of business and special interests. As I working person I want to bring my perspective to the State House and fight for ever day South Dakotans.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Justin Roemmick answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I look up to Franklin Roosevelt and Bernie Sanders. I want to spread their progressive message and ideology throughout South Dakota.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
I believe that being available, open, and honest are essential to being a public figure.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I am willing to listen and work hard. I have a can do attitude and believe that working together is the best policy. I hold a lot of partisan beliefs, but believe in bipartisanship.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
As a member of the State House you must take everyone’s needs into consideration. You need to treat every issues as if someone’s life depends on it, because it probably does.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to leave South Dakota more forward thinking and open to more progressive ideas.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The first historical event that happened in my lifetime was 9/11. I was just 10 years old. I remember being in my 5th grade classroom when they called off school for the day.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was working for a company bagging Rye, Wheat, and other grains. I had it for a few summers.[3]
