I was born and raised in Polk County. I care about the educational system that prepared my wife and I for success. My wife and I have two sons, Wyatt and Rhett. I will work for my boys, and all of Polk County’s children, to have access to the best education possible. I believe all stakeholders, including parents, should have a voice in our educational system. I have devoted my life to the field of education. I have taught in the middle and high school classroom and am currently a college professor. I am a law-abiding, constitutional conservative, who prioritizes child safety, and respects the law enforcement officers who keep Polk County’s children and school staff safe. I will uphold the interests of students and taxpayers in everything I do, seeking continuous improvement in district budget and operations processes to promote the responsible use of funds entrusted to the school board from Polk County taxpayers. I will be a voice of Polk County’s business community on the school board. While preparing college graduates for entry into the agricultural industry, I have built relationships with business partners who communicate their hiring needs. I understand and take seriously the school district’s role in preparing talent for local businesses of all sizes and industries. I believe school board members need to have the conviction to fight for what they believe in and at the same time be willing to listen to other’s ideas to come up with the correct solution to issues.
  • Improve student achievement in core academic areas: We need to graduate students prepared and competitive for postsecondary opportunities, whether that is at a college, trade school or the military. Postsecondary opportunities require mastery of reading and math, as well as critical thinking, problem-solving, customer service, and collaboration skills required for success. I will work with Superintendent Heid and school board members to improve readiness pathways for postsecondary opportunities and to improve Polk school and student achievement, as Polk currently ranks 53rd out of 67 Florida districts.
  • School Safety: Polk County Public Schools has either a School Resource Officer or Guardian at every school site. We have the best Sheriff in the country in Sheriff Grady Judd. I would rely on Sheriff Judd and municipal police chiefs like Lakeland's Ruben Garcia to improve school safety.
  • Access to High-quality educational options for Polk’s families: I believe parents have the right to choose the best educational option for their children, and a student’s access to educational options should not be defined by their zip code. I also think our district offers incredible opportunities and programs of choice to students across the county. However, Polk County still has too many students on waiting lists for magnet, charter and other special programs, indicating we are not meeting present demand for alternative options. No family should be denied access to the high-quality education they seek.
I am passionate about our school system and educational policy. Additionally, I am passionate about the agricultural industry and policy impacting the industry.
I look up to my grandfather, Bob Sharpless. He is humble and caring, but also has strong convictions. I would like to follow his example of speaking the truth, while loving others.
The first historical event I can remember was the Oklahoma City bombing. I turned 11 years old a few days after the event. Also, I was a high school senior during 9/11.
My first job was a grocery bagger at Kash-n-Karry in Lake Wales. I started when I was 15 and had it for 4 years.
The primary job of a school board member is to be part of a team that sets the budget and policies for the school system, and is responsible for the hiring and evaluation of the superintendent.
