Candidate Connection

Justin Vold participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on September 11, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Justin Vold's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Healthcare, education, and the environment.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Healthcare, medicaid, ACA, Single payer, insurance access. I am passionate about healthcare, cause I have lived a life without insurance, being denied coverage for a preexisting condition. I want to be sure no one will have to go through what I have been through. A lot of people don't have access to good affordable healthcare. People are having to ration life saving medication due to costs. People also go without treatment due to costs.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Justin Vold answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I look to Russ Feingold, Tim Walz, Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama. Russ Feingold was the only one to vote against the patriot act after 9/11. I'm very grateful for Obama passing the ACA and helping millions of people to get insurance. Tim Walz is the Minnesota Candidate for Governor, whom I have spoken with on several occasions. Tim Walz has a great inspirational presence and a leader in greater Minnesota.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
A good leader while also being able to let someone else take the lead. As a public servant we must hold ourselves to a higher standard. Being able to work with everyone, regardless of who they are and where they stand on the issues.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Straightforward, honest, every day Joe.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To represent the people of their district, while making decisions that are best for the people they are elected to represent.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The Challenger explosion. I was about 3 or 4.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My computer. It is very good for gaming. I enjoy playing DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) I enjoy how realistic it is. Every switch in works in the aircraft for most models. My favorite plane to fly is the A-10, with the new F/A-18 module coming in a close second.[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Crohn's disease diagnosed at age 15. Fighting it for the past 20 years. Been in remission for the last 5 years.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I feel that government is for the people by the people. I feel anyone should have the opportunity to serve.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Healthcare. Costs are too high, for most people.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. You have to be able to work together too get anything done.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Health and human services funding and policy. Environment and Natural Resources Policy

and Legacy Finance.[3]

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
People not being able to afford medication they depend on to live. People not being able to access the healthcare they need. Healthcare premiums and deductibles costs are too high. The need for more insurance options.[3]
