Kandace Gerdes is a judge of the Colorado 2nd Judicial District. Her current term ends on January 12, 2027.

Gerdes ran for re-election for judge of the Colorado 2nd Judicial District. She won in the retention election on November 8, 2022.

Gerdes was appointed to the office by Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) on November 6, 2013.

Biography

Gerdes earned her undergraduate degree and J.D. from Creighton University. She also holds a master's degree from the University of Denver. Prior to her appointment, Gerdes was a senior deputy district attorney for the 2nd Judicial District. She was also an associate attorney for the law firm of Joseph H. Thibodeau.[1]

There are 164 judges on the Colorado District Courts, each appointed by the governor from a list of names compiled by a nominating commission. Initial terms last at least two years, after which judges must stand for retention in a yes-no election. Subsequent terms last six years.[2]

The court's chief judge is appointed by the chief justice of the supreme court to serve indefinitely.[2]

Qualifications
To serve on the district court, a judge must be:[2]

  • a qualified elector in the district;
  • licensed to practice law in state for five years; and
  • under the age of 72 (retirement by 72 is mandatory).
