Kansas House votes to eliminate nominating commission for appellate judges

Kansas: On March 1, the Kansas House of Representatives voted 73-50 in favor of a bill (HB 2019) that would eliminate the nominating commission through which Court of Appeals applicants are currently screened. The bill would require judges of the Court of Appeals to be appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate.
The bill only applies to the Court of Appeals because altering the Supreme Court requires a constitutional amendment.
The Senate is expected to pass the bill, but the state waits for that final vote.
