Kansas held an election for secretary of state on November 8, 2022. The primary was scheduled for August 2, 2022. The filing deadline was June 1, 2022. This was one of 27 elections for secretary of state taking place in 2022. Click here for an overview of these races. All but three states have a secretary of state. Although the specific duties and powers of the office vary from state to state, secretaries of state are often responsible for the maintenance of voter rolls and for administering elections. Other common responsibilities include registering businesses, maintaining state records, and certifying official documents. At the time of the 2022 elections, there were 27 Republican secretaries of state and 20 Democratic secretaries of state.

A state government triplex refers to a situation where the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state are all members of the same political party. Heading into the 2022 elections, there were 23 Republican triplexes, 18 Democratic triplexes, and nine divided governments where neither party held triplex control.

Increasing access to the ballot box is my top priority as Secretary of State. We've watched as ballot access has been made more difficult for Americans in recent years. Here in Kansas, we've seen legislation that unconstitutionally disenfranchised over 30,000 Kansans and reduced funding sources to county election offices. These attacks on elections have made voting harder for thousands of our neighbors. I will encourage and help expedite implementation of the "Vote Anywhere" law that allows Kansans to vote at any polling location within their county and will support county election offices in expanding access so that all Kansans have a voice and a vote.

Increasing accountability and transparency in the Secretary of State's office.

Restoring and reaffirming confidence in American elections is another key priority for me. At the heart of our democracy are free and fair elections. As the Chief Elections Officer, I will ensure that this remains true, especially in light of the January 6th hearings where an elected official at the highest level tried to influence Secretaries of State across the country. I will never succumb to such pressure. You can trust me to put people over party and to fight for democracy first when it comes to your vote.
I am passionate about protecting our democratic processes and ensuring free, fair, and accessible elections. I believe every eligible Kansan should be allowed to cast a legal ballot and they should have access to do so. I support the Vote Anywhere law as well as designating Election Day a state holiday. I believe we should be creating pathways to voting instead of barriers and that is why I am running to be the next Secretary of State in Kansas.
