Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Kansas State Department of Education reads:[1]

Superintendent
The current Kansas Commissioner of Education is Randy Watson (nonpartisan). Watson assumed office in 2015.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education consists of 10 elected members, each of whom represents a district made up of four contiguous senatorial districts. Board members serve staggered four-year terms. Every other year, the board reorganizes to elect a chairman and vice-chairman.[3] Responsibilities of the board include appointing a Commissioner of Education who serves as its executive director and the "general supervision of public schools, educational institutions and all the educational interests of the state, except educational functions delegated by law to the state board of regents."[4]
