The Judicial Update

April 12, 2012

Kansas: The Kansas Supreme Court has announced that all district and appellate courts will be closed on Friday, April 27, May 11 and 25, and June 8. Court employees will be required to take unpaid leave on these dates, as the court tries to save money. The budgetary problems seem to be the result of delayed funds from the legislature and a shortage of case filing fees. However, Chief Judge Michael Powers of the 8th Judicial District, looked on the bright side, stating, "Since we know the dates, we can plan ahead...It’s not a crisis.”[1] The courts were similarly forced to shut down for four days in 2010.[1]
